R.Giavina Tubicen (2001) I Tubicines o Tubatores erano i suonatori di Tuba, l'antica tromba romana, i cui squilli davano i segnali alle legioni, contribuivano ad “eccitare l'ardimento dei combattenti” come scrive Flavio Renato Vegeizio, sottolineavano cerimonie religiose (Tubicines sacrorum di rango sacerdotale) e partecipavano alla celebrazione delle vittorie. Il Tubicen “Signum canit” lancia il segnale dell'imminente battaglia, incita i combattenti, quindi implora gli dei (Deos implorat” ed infine esulta per la vittoria nel “Peana” conclusivo.

R.Shinn Five Bagatelles (1975) Dedicato a David Hickman Five short virtuoso pieces, one of which includes unison trills and microtones. Composer Notes: I become friends with Bryan Goff in graduate school at the University of Colorado. During the Vietnam War we were both members of the Air Force Academy Band and the Colorado Springs Symphony. These pieces are difficult, demanding exceptional flexibility throughout all registers. One piece calls for quarter tones, unison trills, and other effects. These bagatelles should be performed with panache.

C.Debussy Syrinx (2013) Originale per Flauto Solo. Gabriel Mourey, storico dell'arte e scrittore, propose fin dal 1909 a Debussy di scrivere le musiche di scena per un suo pezzo teatrale basato sul mito di Psiche. Il musicista, per nulla entusiasta del progetto poiché riteneva quel mito troppo sfruttato, tergiversò per parecchio tempo; solo quattro anni dopo egli accettò comunque di comporre un brano per flauto solo con il titolo La flûte de Pan[1]. Il pezzo, brevissimo, di soli tre minuti, avrebbe dovuto essere l'ultima melodia suonata dal dio Pan prima di morire.

H.Tann Look little Low Heavens (1994) Dedicato a Cathy Leach The title is excerpted from a poem by Hopkins. The piece follows an arch shape, as two flanking, meditative sections surround a central, soaring fanfare.

S.Friedman Solus (1976) Second place winner of the 1976 International Trumpet Guild composition contest, an ideal example of the unconventional notation practices and performance expectations found in contemporary works for trumpet. Suddiviso in 4 movimenti contrastanti. Pieno di tecniche “alternative”, glissandi, note pedali, tremoli. Il 4o movimento prevede l'esecuzione senza la seconda popa della tromba al fine di otteere un effetto di contrasto fra le note che risuonano “normalmente” dalla campana e quelle prodotte dalla pompa assente.

M.Arnold Fantasy (1976) Composed in 1969, the delightful Fantasy for Trumpet explores the whole range of the instrument. The 4-minute work culminates in a powerful maestoso statement of its opening melody, which accelerates into a bravura passage of double-tonguing and ascending scales.

L.Larsen Fanfare for the Woman (1994) The music is composed to create layers of tonality which overlap in space, especially in a vast space with a long acoustic decay. Notes I composed Fanfare for the Women to celebrate the opening of the University of Minnesota’s Women’s Sports Pavilion. At the premiere the trumpet soloist stood alone, in the center of the basketball court. The music is composed to create subtle layers of tonality, which overlap in space, especially a vast space with a long acoustic delay. It was extraordinary to watch and hear the solo effort of this fine musician as she spun the sound into time and space. At the end of the ceremony, the manuscript for Fanfare for the Women was placed in a time capsule and sealed in the cornerstone of the building.
